Retrofit Rebate Program – What, Why & Getting Started
To help homeowners save energy, save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Ontario Government has created the Home Energy Retrofit Program. The program awards homeowners with rebates of up to $5,000 for home energy improvements. This matches up to $5,000 available from the federal government – for a total of up to $10,000.
The “why” behind the program
Need a new furnace, air conditioner or water heater? Need new windows or doors? Make energy efficient upgrades to your home and you can take advantage of up to $10,000 available from the retrofit program. You’ll save money, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase your home’s comfort and value. How do I qualify for rebates?
If you live in Ontario and own a single family home you are eligible for the Home Energy Retrofit Program. A single family home is defined as a detached or semi-detached home or a low-rise, multi-unit residential building that is three stories or less and less than 600 square meters.
To qualify for rebates, you need to first complete a Home Energy Audit with a certified energy advisor. After this audit, you have 18 months to make some or all of the upgrades your energy advisor recommends. After completing the work, you need a post-retrofit audit. You will receive rebates for the amounts allowed for each eligible upgrade you make, up to $10,000, even if you do the work yourself.
How much can I get back?
There is up to $10,000 available to you to make energy-saving upgrades. The Governments of Ontario and Canada will reimburse you the allowed amount for each upgrade you complete.
How do I apply for rebates?
It’s easy. Your energy advisor will apply for rebates on your behalf after you have completed your energy efficient upgrades and your home has been re-assessed. Your energy advisor will be able to tell you exactly how much you can expect to receive.
